Offline PDF Redaction Tool for Sensitive Documents
Redact text-layer PDFs locally before sending them to AI, clients, vendors or outside counsel. DocMask also supports Word and Excel, so your workflow is not trapped in PDF-only tools.
Updated June 17, 2026. Windows 10/11. LibreOffice recommended for PDF support.
If the file is sensitive, "deleted after upload" is not the same as "never uploaded." Online PDF tools can be convenient and legitimate, but they still require your file to leave the device. Offline redaction keeps the processing step on the machine where the file already lives.
When offline PDF redaction is the right choice
- The PDF contains personal data, client records, legal strategy, patient information, payroll or account details.
- Your organization blocks upload of confidential files to unknown SaaS tools.
- You need to ask ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot for analysis, but do not want the original values in the prompt.
- You work in a low-connectivity, air-gapped or policy-restricted environment.
- You need a reversible alias map for the AI answer, not just permanent black bars.
How DocMask handles PDFs
Text-layer PDFs
DocMask works with PDFs that contain selectable text. It uses local conversion paths and a side-by-side review flow.
Scanned PDFs
Image-only PDFs need OCR first. DocMask detects this limitation instead of silently producing a misleading output.
AI workflows
Export a redacted copy or paste redacted text into AI, then map the answer back to real values locally.
Offline vs online PDF redaction
| Question | Online PDF tools | DocMask |
|---|---|---|
| Does the file leave the device? | Yes, the file is uploaded for processing. | No document content is uploaded to DocMask during redaction. |
| Is it best for non-sensitive files? | Often yes. Online tools are fast and convenient. | Usually overkill for one public, non-sensitive PDF. |
| Can it preserve AI context? | Permanent black bars can reduce context. | Aliases preserve relationships for summaries and analysis. |
| Can it handle Office files? | Often PDF-first. | Word, Excel, PDF and legacy Office formats. |
| Can claims be audited? | Depends on vendor documentation. | DocMask publishes a claim-by-claim audit page. |
